Summary
John writes 1 John 2:18–27 to clarify what genuine faith looks like amid deception and darkness. False teachers (antichrists) have emerged within the church, denying Jesus's incarnation and divinity; believers must remain anchored in God's sovereignty, truth, and the indwelling Holy Spirit to persevere faithfully.
Highlights
A genuine mark of faith is perseverance. And those who end up looking apart for a while then walking away, it's not that God lost somebody. It's not that Satan overwhelmed and won that battle. When a person trusts Christ, and God places his promised Holy Spirit in them, he does not let them go.
What does it look like for us to live faithfully in a dark world? You might come up with all these other crazy answers, John just says simply, guys, it's about abiding. God gave you these two incredible gifts of the Holy Spirit and the truth of God, what we have in Christ, abide, remain, live, continue in it.
Satan, he's not super creative, guys. He just repackages and rebrands the same garbage and just delivers it in a new way in each age.
