You do not and in fact cannot earn your way back to God and he's not asking you to. In fact, that's why he sent his son is to do that on your behalf.
The worst thing about us isn't what we've done, it's what's in our heart. The reason Christianity doesn't work like that is because that's too superficial to fix what's actually wrong with our lives.
You don't come to Jesus in your work clothes ready to get it done. You come to Jesus dressed in the rags of a beggar and ask, 'Can you make me new?'
