Summary
Jesus opens the Sermon on the Mount by teaching the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10), presenting eight characteristics of blessed disciples. Rather than defining blessedness by circumstances, Jesus promises that those with spiritual poverty, mourning, meekness, hunger for righteousness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and perseverance will experience God's kingdom and comfort.
