Summary
Jesus introduces fasting as the third spiritual discipline for his followers, teaching that fasting—abstaining from food and drink—serves purposes of mourning, suffering, and seeking God's direction for critical decisions. The sermon explores biblical examples and practical methods of fasting while emphasizing that fasting must be done privately, not for show, as an intimate practice between the believer and God.
Highlights
Nothing is more focusing than deprivation. It really focuses you. And so your focus then can be on what you're gonna eat when you get to eat, or your focus can then be on the one who's called you not to eat.
Life is hard, but God has given us tools. We get to call Him Father. We can deprive ourselves of food so we can fill ourselves with Him.
The Lord, nowhere does He call us to suffer in private. In fact, we're told that even if you have a burden, that burdens are meant to be shared, right?
