Summary
Romans 12:3-8 teaches that the church functions as one body with many differently-gifted members. Humility—understanding oneself rightly as God sees you and recognizing all gifts come from God—is essential for using gifts to edify others rather than seeking personal glory or comparison.
Highlights
Humility is not belittling yourself verbally in your mind. Humility is the personal quality of being free from arrogance and pride. God, I agree with who you say I am and I align myself with it. No more, no less.
To speak low, to speak lower than God about yourself is to disagree with God on who you are. It is to look at God and say, I know me better than you know me. Which in itself is the exact opposite thing we want to do—we are being prideful and arrogant before God when we are seeking to be humble.
The spiritual gifts do not reflect the worth of the person who has them. A person who has gifts that enables them to minister to large crowds should not think of themselves as a super Christian because they are an ordinary person just like you that have been given a task.
