Summary
Jesus teaches Peter that forgiveness must be extended repeatedly and from the heart, using the parable of the unforgiving servant to illustrate how God's costly mercy toward us should shape our willingness to forgive others. Forgiveness is not excusing or forgetting but a deliberate commitment to release debt and restore relationship.
Highlights
God's command equals God's blessing. His commands are a blessing because they show us how to be like Him.
Forgiveness says it was a big deal. Forgiveness says there was a debt incurred, you do owe me. I was hurt, it is your fault. Forgiveness doesn't minimize the problem at all.
Remember what you owed. When Jesus told this story he knew he was going to have to pay that debt. He's not being flippant or unnuanced. He knows all of that when he tells this parable.
