Summary
Jesus warns against practicing righteousness for public acclaim rather than God's approval. Through teaching on giving, prayer, and fasting, he calls followers to align their hearts with God's gaze rather than the world's eyes, shifting from performance to authentic relationship with their Father.
Highlights
Do you try to give an impression of your spiritual life to the people around you that is a better picture than what happens in the quiet spaces of your life?
You can bring your hypocrisy to Jesus. You can leave the street corner. You can stop pretending to be more holy and righteous than you are. And you can go into your room and you can actually rest in the warmth and presence of a God that you can't impress.
When you live for the eyes of the world, and even if you get those eyes to praise you, that's your reward. That's it. That's the sum total of the reward of your life. That fleeting hit of serotonin when someone clicks on your post and says, I like this.
