Summary
Through Jephthah's story in Judges 10-12, Israel's idolatry has distorted their understanding of God so severely that their judge treats Yahweh like a pagan deity, making rash vows and causing devastating consequences. The sermon warns that cultural conformity and comfort lead to false theology, and only Jesus—the true judge—reveals God's true character and offers redemption.
Highlights
Bad theology kills. 42,001 of God's chosen people, including his own daughter, die because he misunderstands God and who God is.
God can and does use flawed people. It's all he has to work with except Jesus, the one not flawed person. God uses flawed people without endorsing all of their actions.
Jephthah knew God's name. He didn't know God. Are you the same? Do you know Jesus's name, but you don't know Jesus?
