Summary
Jesus teaches that God cares about internal character, not external rule-following. Through Matthew 5:38-48, he calls Christians to love enemies, pray for persecutors, and respond to harm with forgiveness and generosity—mirroring God's unconditional love demonstrated at the cross.
Highlights
God is not asking anything of you in this text that he is not also doing.
There was a day when I died, utterly died to George Muller, utterly died to my opinions, my preferences, taste, and even my will. Since that moment, I have studied only for one thing, to show myself approved to God.
When Jesus went to the cross and died the most excruciating death possible, he did it for you when you were totally undeserving of that act. Love. He loves you.
