Summary
Matthew 5:33-48 teaches followers of Jesus to embody God's character through faithful words, surrendered rights, and sacrificial love for enemies—not as earned acceptance but as children reflecting their Father's nature.
Highlights
The Bible is actually something different. God basically says hey no I am your dad. I am your God. We have this relational thing and now I'm giving you a description of my character so that you can know how you should live as my son or as my daughter.
The reason we turn the other cheek isn't just because this is what good people do. I think the reason we turn the other cheek is because that's what Jesus did and the reason we love our enemies isn't because this is just like the right thing to do in the world it's because this is what Jesus did for us.
It's only when you reach the limit of being able to follow God into these things you start to understand the kind of love that he has for you because you know when God made a promise to bless you and to save you he did so knowing that being faithful to his word to you would cost him everything.
