Summary
Paul charges Timothy to entrust the gospel to faithful people who will teach others, grounding this mission in God's grace rather than personal ability. Through three images—the soldier, the athlete, and the farmer—Paul describes faithful disciples as those with proper wartime perspective, biblical knowledge, and labor that trusts God for harvest.
Highlights
You're not a disciple maker when you share the gospel and somebody becomes a follower of Christ. You're a disciple maker when you go four generations deep.
A soldier doesn't get entangled in civilian pursuits since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him—we need to have a wartime mentality and see this world as it really is.
The difference is going out and sharing with someone because you're supposed to, and going out believing that Jesus is going to work in this person's life.
