DiscipleshipIdentity in ChristJesus / ChristologyGraceMatthew 16:21–23Matthew 16:24–28Matthew 16:25–27
Summary
Jesus redefines discipleship to Peter in Matthew 16, rejecting customized versions of faith and calling followers to deny themselves, pick up their cross, and die to personal desires. Though costly, true discipleship yields the greatest reward: Jesus himself, who is infinitely more valuable than anything the world offers.
Highlights
Discipleship is anti-customization. You can't define Jesus. Jesus will define himself and he'll define for you what it looks like to follow him.
Salvation is free but discipleship is costly. Grace is given in an instant but a life of discipleship is a daily death to your own desires to follow Jesus.
There are no cheap seats in the car that Jesus is driving. Jesus is not driving to your dream house or your dream girl. He's driving to a cross to die for your sins.
