Summary
Paul teaches that the primary motivation for Christian living is forward-looking hope, not backward-looking duty. Through the example of Christ's self-sacrifice, the transformative power of Scripture combined with endurance, and God's mercy toward sinners, believers experience hope that enables them to serve others and glorify God.
Highlights
If Jesus did anything well, he did not live to please himself to the point of death, even death on the cross.
Mercy is so much better than earning it. You go to God and you ask for mercy and he will not turn you away because he is the God and Father of Jesus; he is full of mercy.
There is only one hero in the Bible. It's God. Everybody else is a zero.
