Summary
David's Psalm 27 teaches that genuine followers of Jesus can live courageously despite legitimate fears—of the future, suffering becoming permanent, or God's absence—by practicing holy indifference to outcomes, drawing strength from God rather than self, embracing rather than avoiding hardship, and beholding Christ's beauty and sacrifice on the cross.
Highlights
So much of our lives is spent avoiding pain and discomfort, avoiding suffering. And if you spend your whole life leaning away from what's hard, when it finally does come, it will be crippling.
Souls are like athletes that need opponents worthy of them if they are to be tried and extended and pushed to the full use of their powers. Your trials do something to you. They make you more perfect like Jesus.
The only way you will ever fight your fear and have courage is if you can look with confidence that the thing you're afraid of has been put to death, and that's what happened on the cross.
