Summary
Psalm 42 addresses the experience of spiritual disconnect—when believers feel unable to sense God's presence despite genuine faith and devotion. The psalmist's struggle reveals that finding one's way home requires refusing lesser satisfactions, honestly acknowledging emotional pain, preaching truth to oneself rather than listening to feelings, and ultimately grasping Christ as the light and truth that leads through darkness.
Highlights
It's actually a more noble life to live thirsty and unsatisfied chasing after the most beautiful things than to satisfy yourself on lesser things.
You have to take yourself in hand. You have to address yourself. You have to preach to yourself. You have to question yourself: why are you downcast? What business have you to feel this way?
When you feel lost in the darkness, you need the light of God and the truth of God to break through, and those are names of Jesus. When all you have are the things your heart is telling you, you need Christ to come and find you.
