Jesus's birth fulfills God's promise of true peace (shalom)—not the fleeting, oppressive peace of Caesar Augustus, but restoration with God through the gospel. The shepherds model how believers should respond: treasuring God's faithfulness and proclaiming the Savior to others.
Highlights
No amount of Christmas lights or Christmas movies or warm blankets or any of that is gonna fill a God-sized hole in our hearts. Only Jesus can make us whole and give us peace that is beyond our understanding.
A savior has come to take away your sin so that you can take on his righteousness and become one that God is pleased with. That's how that happens.
While the emperor may give peace from war on land and sea, he is unable to give peace from passion, grief, and envy. He cannot give us peace of heart, for which man yearns for more than even outward peace.
