The Death of Death
Mercy Hill Church - Cincinnati
Speaker: Ernie Bonnoitt
March 31, 2024 · 35 min
Summary
Through John 18:28–19:30, the pastor identifies four tragedies in the passion narrative: the religious leaders' rejection of the sinless Jesus, Pilate's skepticism of truth itself, the crowd's choice of Barabbas over the King, and people clinging to false kings instead of Christ. The sermon culminates in Jesus's declaration 'It is finished'—the completed payment for sin that requires no addition or supplement.
Highlights
The only superhero in Christianity is Jesus. The only one that can sustain the level of scrutiny of this world is the perfect lamb of God.
Every man's heart, there is a throne. And every man puts something on that throne in their heart and they worship it. The tragedy is that many of us would reject the true king in order to cling to the one that is already sitting on the throne of our hearts.
In the moment that he's being tortured to death when the last things he does is he makes provision for the woman that raised him and he gives charge to one of his disciples to do it. This is one of the most amazing acts of love.
