Matthew 3 presents John the Baptist announcing the kingdom of God and calling all people—both sinners and the self-righteous—to genuine repentance. Rather than judging others, true followers must humble themselves, surrender both their sin and perceived righteousness, and trust entirely in God's mercy.
Highlights
To follow Jesus, to be someone whose life is marked by repentance, you take everything that's broken about your life and put it in a pile, but you also need to put all your perceived goodness in another pile, and you light them both on fire.
Jesus is not somebody who opens a window and yells at you to climb out—he climbs into the burning house, picks you up, and carries you to safety while you're already spiritually dead.
There's one thing that's true of every single person in the kingdom of heaven: they don't think they deserve to be there, and they're confident of that.
