Summary
Genesis 2 presents Eden as a garden of provision and relational abundance, with two central trees representing humanity's choice: the tree of life (eternal communion with God) and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (autonomous self-definition leading to death). God's placement of both trees constitutes a test that reveals His willingness to suffer the cost of human freedom.
Highlights
You cannot have the tree of life in the garden unless you put the tree of death in the garden. You cannot have one without the other.
The only way that God could place the tree of life at the center of our story was if he placed the tree of death at the center of his.
The end of the story is far better than the beginning. We could have never known the depth of his love without the cross.
