Summary
Mark 14 presents Mary's costly anointing of Jesus as an act of unreasonable worship that contrasts with Judas's surface-level spirituality and misplaced priorities. Jesus validates her devotion as preparation for his burial and kingship, teaching that the gospel prioritizes spiritual salvation above physical needs while also caring for both. Listeners learn to make Jesus their highest priority and come to him in humble repentance.
Highlights
Do I ever have a surface level spirituality that doesn't go anywhere beyond what other people see? Do I want people to think that I'm a good godly man or you're a good godly woman even though internally you know that that's not who you really are?
It's not either or, but it is both and. The most important thing is a person's eternal salvation, and because of what Jesus has done for us, we also meet the physical needs of people.
You come to God exactly as you are and he cleans you up, and he begins a work that changes everything about your life.
