Summary
Through Revelation 2:1-7, the Ephesian church is commended for doctrinal soundness and diligent service yet rebuked for losing their first love for Jesus. The pastor argues that outward ministerial activity without genuine affection for Christ renders a believer's usefulness ineffective, and prescribes remembrance of the gospel, fervent prayer, love for God's people, evangelistic zeal, and transparent confession as remedies for apathy.
Highlights
You can have everything right on the surface. You can be diligent, you can be discerning, you can be persevering. But unless you have the most important thing, it renders the mission of your life and the mission of your church ineffective.
It's easy to confuse reputation with reality. It's possible to appear attached to the vine and in fact yet be detached from Christ and have everything going on the surface and yet be lacking what Jesus says is the most important thing.
You give the gospel away or you lose it. You love the Lord Jesus Christ and that love and that passion and that affection for Jesus ripples to the next generation. If it's just this mechanical going through the motions, the church won't continue.
