Summary
Jesus reframes divorce not as a legal question about permissible grounds, but as a fundamental misunderstanding of marriage's design. God joins husband and wife as one flesh—a covenant that cannot be dissolved by human authority, calling believers to sacrificial faithfulness modeled on Christ's mercy rather than calculating the minimum requirements of law.
Highlights
What God has joined together, let no one separate. You are not that stronger force. Marriage is a single living organism, and we do violence to ourselves and those around us when we treat it in any other way.
The gospel turns us into people who are no longer governed by a set of laws. Instead, we are called forth to a set of values and a vision for our life because of the story that we are in.
I decided that even if somehow our marriage got unbelievably sideways, I decided in that moment I would give the rest of my life to try to restore her to me and us to God. There is not a certain limit to the mercy and grace I should give this other person because there's no limit to the mercy and grace that Jesus has given me.
