Summary
Paul opens Ephesians by declaring that God the Father has blessed believers in Christ with every spiritual blessing from before the foundation of the world. Through five key words—chosen, adoption, redemption, inheritance, and sealed—Paul traces God's eternal plan to redeem and adopt sinners as His children through Christ's blood, securing their future inheritance by the Holy Spirit.
Highlights
God's choosing of you, God knew what that choice would cost him. He knew what that choice would cost him. It wasn't like he made a choice about you and then later came to understand what that would mean for him, what it would cost him. No, before the foundation of the world, God knew you.
Who looks down the corridors of time and knows that the person standing in front of them will abuse and cheat and steal and wound them time and time and time again, and still in love chooses them? This is our story with God the Father.
Don't get distracted trying to piece together these things exactly. If you get caught trying to wrap your hands around these things fully and completely, then you will miss having God use these words to wrap his arms around your heart.
