Summary
Matthew 6:1-18 teaches that hypocrisy is doing right spiritual acts for wrong motives—performing faith to be seen rather than to know God. Jesus exposes how giving, prayer, and fasting become mere performance when motivated by seeking human approval, robbing believers of authenticity, integrity, and eternal reward. The cure is shifting one's audience from people to God alone, practicing spiritual disciplines in secret to cultivate genuine relationship with the Father.
Highlights
Hypocrisy makes faith something you wear instead of something you live. It becomes a type of costume Christianity.
What you are in private is what you really are. What you are in public will never blind God to who you actually are in private.
The applause of people will always fade, but the approval of God lasts forever.
