Summary
Jesus commissions his twelve apostles to proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, sending them as messengers of a revolutionary king with authority to heal and cast out demons. The passage emphasizes that Jesus is not merely a spiritual teacher but a revolutionary king demanding loyalty and establishing a kingdom with clear divisions between those who receive him and those who reject him.
Highlights
Jesus did not come to let us sit on the throne. He came to sit on the throne himself. And if we're gonna receive him truly and honestly, we have to let him eventually take that place there.
Matthew does not portray Jesus as just a spiritual man who's starting a new religion. He presents him as one with authority who starts a revolution.
When Jesus invites people to follow him, he sends them out on a mission. Like the church generally, us today, like we are in Ann Arbor and we are still like following up with the authority that God gave these men.
