Summary
Paul demonstrates God's sovereignty and grace through Romans 11, arguing that God's choice precedes faith and works, and that salvation is entirely God's unmerited gift. God remains both kind and severe, grafting in Gentiles while temporarily hardening Israel, all to reveal that mercy alone saves.
Highlights
If grace is merited in any way by us, either by faith or by works, it's no longer grace. Grace is God's free, sovereign choice based on his counsel and his wisdom alone.
God is essentially a giver. You can't possibly pay God back because even your good works are a gift from God to you. So the more you do, the more in debt you become to God's grace.
Whenever we get theologically confused, we look at the cross. What we see at the cross is God's completely unmerited grace toward us and his severity being poured out on Jesus.
