Summary
Paul redefines marriage as a covenant reflecting Christ's sacrificial love for the church, calling wives to submit to husbands as to Christ and husbands to love sacrificially as Christ loved. The passage critiques worldly power structures, positioning marriage as a prophetic witness to the gospel's upside-down kingdom where authority serves rather than dominates.
Highlights
You do not belong to your husband. You now belong to Christ, and it's because of this reality that is now the central reality over your life.
In the world leadership works like a pyramid—everybody lifting up the person at the top. Jesus inverts that pyramid and goes to the very bottom so he can lift everyone else up with his life.
You may not have an enjoyable marriage in this life, but if you have Christ, you have the real thing. Marriage was always pointing to something greater.
