Summary
Jesus commands disciples to baptize believers into the triune name, marking entrance into discipleship and declaring union with Christ. Baptism is both a death-and-rebirth ceremony and a naming ceremony that establishes believers' fundamental identity in Christ, not merely a symbolic act but a sacramental declaration of whose they are.
Highlights
Baptism is a naming ceremony. You were born with the name of Adam written all over your life, but now in baptism, you are baptized out of the name of Adam and into the name of God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
What is most true about you as a Christian is that you have been united to Jesus Christ. This is the truth that sits at the center of your existence—that for all of time, all that is yours is his, and all that is his is yours.
Who are you? What is your name? The Christian answer to that question is: I was baptized. That's my real name. That's who I am.
