Summary
Jesus calls Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him as disciples, not merely as believers or admirers. Discipleship requires leaving behind one's old identity and life entirely to follow Christ, receiving a new purpose: to become fishers of men who draw others to the cross.
Highlights
I spend a lot of my time trying to get Jesus to be a follower of me. I'm always trying to get Jesus to be about what I'm about instead of coming to Him and figuring out what is He about.
The call to follow, it once produces a new situation. To stay in the old situation makes discipleship impossible. Jesus must make it clear from the start that his word is not just an abstract doctrine but it is the recreation of the whole life of man.
When Jesus calls someone to follow him, he's literally pulling them from darkness into light, from death to life. And his intention is that you would go back out into the darkness, grab more people who are there and say, you have to come meet my Jesus.
