Summary
Solomon's exhaustive search for meaning through wisdom, pleasure, and work proves futile; only in God's hands can life find true meaning and joy. The teacher urges listeners to stop pursuing satisfaction apart from Christ and recognize that eternal meaning comes solely through relationship with God.
Highlights
Human wisdom cannot fix these things, human wisdom cannot make life add up and make sense. It's like a warped board that no matter how hard you try to straighten it out, you're not gonna be able to make it perfectly straight again.
True joy is only found in God. He tried it all. He had it all. He did it all. And we see this all the time in our culture today of people going on similar pursuits. We see athletes, celebrities, successful entrepreneurs—whenever they get to the peak of whatever they're pursuing, they're no happier than they were before.
Christ is the only thing that gives meaning and he redeems our worldly and vain pursuits. He is the only escape from our futility.
