Summary
Solomon identifies three community killers—envy, exile, and hubris—that trap us in futility and isolation. Paul's letter to the Philippians reveals Christ's self-sacrifice as the answer: Jesus emptied himself to rescue us from envy, exile, and pride, freeing us to live in authentic community.
Highlights
We were designed from the very beginning to live in community.
It is possible to start well, but end up poorly—in his mind, he doesn't need any more instruction; he's been doing it for years.
Because Jesus joyfully gave up existence in heaven to sacrifice himself for us, we no longer need to be trapped in envy and can instead give ourselves to others.
