Summary
Peter teaches that Christian identity flows from being beloved by God through the gospel, not from personal performance. This secure identity compels believers to abandon fleshly passions, live honorably as witnesses to outsiders, and submit to governing authorities—even unjust ones—until such submission would require disobedience to God.
Highlights
The gospel doesn't require obedience. The gospel produces obedience. We don't live differently so that we would be different. We live differently because we are different.
Your identity is not what you have done in the past, present, or will do in the future, but it is who you are loved by—that God loves you.
You can honor people and treat them with dignity and disagree with things that are wrong. Those two things can exist at the same time.
