Summary
Jesus's baptism demonstrates his commitment to fulfill all righteousness by living the perfect life required of humanity, which he then credits to believers as a gift. Through the Trinity's visible presence at his baptism, God confirms Jesus's identity and invites believers into the same intimate relationship with the Father that Jesus enjoys, available only through identifying with Christ's death and resurrection.
Highlights
Jesus got baptized that day because he was living the life that you would one day be required to live. Jesus was actively living the perfect human life that he was preparing to give you as a gift.
Jesus freely meets the demands of righteousness on your behalf. But more than that it came at a great cost to him because he doesn't just give you his righteousness, he takes from you all of the things in your life that make you unrighteous.
You cannot have the righteousness of Christ without the crucifixion of Christ. You actually have to go to the bloody cross and say Jesus, I identify with that.
